150th Birth Centenary Celebrations of Swami Vivekananda

The Embassy of India in Berne and the Vedantique Society in Geneva held 150th Birth Centenary celebrations in the scenic and beautiful town of Saas Fee in the Alps in the canton of Valais which was visited by Swami Vivekananda in August 1896. A plaque was unveiled at the Hotel Grand Metropol by Dr T V Nagendra Prasad, Deputy Chief of Mission, where Swami stayed and a bronze bust of Swami was unveiled in front of the Saas Fee Museum by Dr Jayant Dasgupta, India's Permanent Representative to WTO in Geneva. The Mayor of Saas Fee Mr Roger Kalbermatten and Ms Urs Hess, the owner of the Hotel were present on the occasion. Over 50 people of Indian origin and Indians attended the celebrations including representatives of Indian associations in Switzerland, prominent Indian origin persons, representatives of Vedantique Society and Ramakrishna Missions in the neighbouring countries. Later, cultural programmes were held in Geneva and Zurich, on August 31 and September 1 respectively, with musical presentations by the popular singer Ms Kavita Krishnamurthi. After the unveiling of the plaque and bronze bust, a meeting was held at the community hall where Mayor, Swami Amarananda and others spoke on the life and relevance of teachings of Swami to the contemporary world. Some artists presented songs on Swami Vivekananda.
