Sanjay Bhattacharyya, assumed charge as Ambassador of India to Switzerland in February 2022. He is a 1987 batch Indian Foreign Service officer.

He served as Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs (2020-2022) and was responsible for relations with the Arab world, passport services, consular relations and diaspora affairs and was Sherpa to BRICS. Earlier he served as Ambassador of India to Turkey (2018-2020) and Ambassador of India to Egypt (2015-2018). As Joint Secretary (South) (2012-2015) he was responsible for crafting the Act East Policy. As Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka (2010-12) he was involved in the conclusion of the historic land boundary agreement; as DCM in Tokyo (2007-2010), he saw the elevation of ties to comprehensive strategic partnership; and as DCM in Beijing (2002-2005) he oversaw boundary and bilateral relations. Earlier he worked in Brussels (1998-2001), Beijing (1992-95) and Hong Kong (1989-92), besides Headquarters in East Asia, External Publicity, Americas and Finance Divisions.

He contributed a chapter “India and China: New Directions” in Indian Foreign Policy – Challenges and Opportunities (2007) and “India and Egypt: New Partnership in the New Era” in Asian Perspectives (2017).

He was born in New Delhi in 1962. He studied Economics at St. Stephens College, University of Delhi and at Delhi School of Economics. He learnt Chinese at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He speaks English, Bengali and Hindi. His wife Ranu is an educator, author and storyteller. They have a son and a daughter.
