Remarks by Ambassador at Digital India Summit – IT to AI
August 15, 2018

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today India is celebrating its 72nd Independence Day.
I think, this Independence Day is an important occasion for us to meet and discuss Digital India, a topic of utmost relevance for India and the world today.
I welcome all speakers and participants for this important event.

To quote my Minister of Electronics and IT and Law and Justice, Digital India is a transformational initiative incorporating the spirit of ‘SabkaSath’ to create a new India by ensuring ‘SabkaVikas’. It aims to bridge the gap between the digital haves and have nots. It has indeed been a driver of good governance for India.

Digital India’s goal has three pillars: Providing digital infrastructure as a utility to every citizen of India, e-governance which includes providing government services on demand, and digital empowerment of citizen. And all of them have to progress in sync with each other to have an effective result.

Indian IT industry has a story of steady growth. It has contributed immensely for India’s economic transformation. In 25 years, IT and ITeS exports grew from US$ 100 Million to US$ 125 Billion. Indian IT industry today is an attractive destination by providing quality, capacity, capability, domain knowledge and attractive business models.

I am happy to note that Switzerland has been a partner for India in its Digital India and Start Up India flagship programmes. Our companies are engaging in IT and AI fields. At the same time, the fact remains that there exits huge potential for deeper cooperation and engagement.

I would not like to speak long. In fact, I have a message from our Honorable UnionMinister of Electronics and IT and Law and Justice, Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad. He has send us a twelve minute video message giving an overview of the Digital India programme. I thank the Honorable Minister for his time and support.

Once again I thank each one of your for being present here. I hope the deliberations here would be useful for to take our engagement forward.

Thank you.
